Chantix or Zyban?
Both medications, Chantix and Zyban have amazing results in smoking
cessation. While both Chantix and Zyban reduce the craving for nicotine,
the mechanism of Chantix is different from Zyban. Chantix helps
reduce nicotine craving and withdrawal effects in smokers whereas
Zyban has been approved as an antidepressant. Afterwards, Zyban
has been approved as an aid to patients who want to quit smoking
by FDA in 1997. Pfizer scientists developed Chantix (Varenicline)
specifically to help smokers quit. Chantix got approved by the FDA
in May 2006.
Chantix vs Zyban
Zyban works by reducing the craving for nicotine on a neurological
level by boosting chemical levels in the brain.
Chantix partially activates the nicotine receptors in the
brain thereby reducing the craving for nicotine and withdrawal symptoms.
If smoking is resumed, the effects of nicotine on the brain are
diminished reducing the craving for nicotine.
Zyban boosts chemical levels in the brain to create less
of urge to smoke.
Chantix works on nicotine receptors in the brain to create
less of urge to smoke.
Chantix has been proven to be more effective in helping smokers
quit than Zyban the only other nonnicotine prescription medicine
for smoking cessation. The comparative studies show that Chantix
is far more effective than Zyban even with fewer dosages.

Results are from 2 identically designed clinical trials in which
patients received either Chantix
1 mg twice a day, Zyban 150 mg twice a day, or sugar pills twice
a day for 12 weeks.
