How Does Chantix Work?
First, you have to know how nicotine works.
When smoke is inhaled, nicotine attaches to receptors in the brain.
This sends a message to a different part of the brain to release
a chemical called dopamine which gives a feeling of pleasure. Based
on research, it is believed that Chantix works by activating these
receptors and blocking nicotine from attaching to them. However,
Chantix does not contain nicotine.
Most people will take Chantix for 12 weeks. You may choose to smoke
for the first week you are on Chantix. Make sure that you try and
stop smoking on your Quit Date (Day 8). If you slip, try again.
Some people need a few weeks for Chantix to work best.
Does Chantix Work?
Results of studies show Chantix works better than a sugar pill
(placebo) at helping smokers quit. Researchers found more people
were able to remain smoke-free with Chantix. Participants reported
reduced withdrawal signs and symptoms and reduced pleasure from
smoking.
Chantix also appears to work better than the antidepressant bupropion
(Zyban), though results have
been mixed. One study found that Chantix worked better for only
the first 24 weeks. Others found Chantix worked better than bupropion
for up to a year after participants quit smoking.
